About The Diploma Program

The North Carolina Solar Center at NC State University is now offering a Green Building Diploma Series (GBDS) tailored specifically for building professionals. The program will provide the necessary skills and information to help architects, engineers, general contractors, and others in the building profession get involved with the rapidly growing market for high-performance and sustainable buildings in both the commercial and residential sectors.

Tailored similar to the Renewable Energy Technologies Diploma Series (RETDS), the Green Building series requires the completion of 105 contact hours, or three week-long workshops within three years. Two week-long workshops on commercial design and building will be offered in addition to the already offered residential workshop on Designing and Building a Sustainable Home or Small Building. AIA credits will be offered for the GBDS workshops, while PDHs will be offered for both RETDS and GBDS courses. All of the diploma series programs offer Continuing Education Units.

To earn a Green Building Diploma from NC State University, the participant must complete two weeklong workshops (or a total of 70 contact hours) of buildings courses plus one of the four renewable energy technologies offered under the Renewable Energy Technologies Diploma Series. The table below simplifies the process of earning your Green Building Diploma:

Green Building Chart

First, choose two week-long green buildings workshops: (70 contact hours)

  • GB I: Designing and Building a Sustainable Home or SmallBuilding (a.k.a. RE III)
  • GB II: Designing and Building Commercial Green Buildings 1
  • GB III: Designing and Building Commercial Green Buildings 2

Then, choose one week-long workshop: (35 contact hours)

  • RE I: Solar Technologies (PV or Solar Thermal), usually scheduled for November
  • RE II: Business Basics of RE, Biofuels or Photovoltaic Industries, usually scheduled for March
  • RE IV: Electric Generation withWind or Photovoltaics, usually scheduled for September

Take note that Designing and Building a Sustainable Home is RE III, the third weeklong workshop of the RETDS. Therefore it is possible to earn dual diplomas by taking three RETDS workshops with one of them being RE III, and add a workshop on commercial buildings. So, you can take advantage of earning two Diplomas by taking 4 weeklong workshops!
